The root of the word “strategy” The Greek word “strategia” means “command and leadership”. The simple meaning of strategy now is an action plan to coordinate and organize actions to achieve the goal. In another view, the lexical meaning of strategy: The word strategy is derived from the Greek word (Strategos) Strategos. Strategos or (strategy) means army. Strategos was also used to mean army command. For example, the ancient Greek army, which consisted of small groups of soldiers belonging to Greek families, was commanded by a man named Stratos.
Henry Mintberg offered five definitions of strategy in management theory:
Strategy as a plan – a practical directional path to achieve the desired set of goals. Similar to the concept of strategic planning;
Strategy as a pattern – A continuous pattern of past behavior, with a strategy evolving over time rather than planned or intended. Where the pattern achieved was different from the goal, he referred to this strategy as emergence.
Strategy as positioning – placing brands, products or companies in the market, based on the conceptual framework of consumers or other stakeholders. Strategy determined primarily by agents outside the company;
Strategy as a pirate – a special maneuver to overtake an opponent.
Strategy as a vision – the implementation of a strategy based on “business theory” or the natural expansion of the organization’s ideology or ideological perspective.
